Upgrade!

January 14th, 2007 · 2 Comments

I made the upgrade to vista after finally rebuilding my computer. Most software I was using before like Hamachi, Photoshop and Trillian still work now, maybe just with a couple hiccups during install. Ironically, the most difficult programs have been Microsoft programs. Intellitype and Intellipoint versions for XP would not install at all for Vista. And it wasn’t easy to find these versions. ActiveSync also is also incompatible with Vista and won’t be available except in its new form of Windows Mobile Device Center. This version is beta but works well.
Remapping the default folders for Music, Video, and Pictures to different drive letters or folders is a pain so far and is the most strange thing about Vista so far. Hopefully more help from MS will come for this after the official release of Vista on the 30th.

Remapping the default folders for Music, Video, and Pictures is easy if you right-click, choose Properties, and then select the Location tab. Why do you say this is a pain?

Since posting the article I believe I found the true reason for my vexation. After I had successfully moved the folders for the media to different partitions, I had imported photos from my digital camera using the default Windows Photo Gallery tool. And that is the reason why my new photos were placed back at the default folder in the profile. Similar case when I imported some music from a CD and from an removable drive, WMP placed them at the old locations instead of the new ones. After fiddling with the Pictures folders and changing the settings within WPG I had a problem with the Pictures shortcut on the start-menu. It was pointing to a null location and the location tab was unavailable in the properties menu for it. So I recreated the default folder and then was able the remap the folder again, but properly. Its all just slightly different enough from XP to throw me off a bit. But most of the changes so far have been for the better.

The reason I’ve gotten into the habit of creating different partions is for easier backups down the road. Usually when I create a backup I use a tool like Norton Ghost to create an image of the partition, instead of trying to pick and choose folders. Since I have a whole lot of media (a few hundred gigs altogether), it would take a whole lot of time and space in the backup. Do have any other methods that you use?
